South Bend Officer in "Good Spirits" After Training Accident

Sgt. Harvey Mills was airlifted to an Indy hospital with serious injuries after an accident during bomb squad training.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend police officer injured earlier this week during a training exercise is said to be in "good spirits".

Sgt. Harvey Mills was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital Tuesday afternoon after something went wrong during bomb squad training at an SBPD bomb disposal site.

His family told ABC-57 TV in South Bend that Mills is in good spirits, despite his injuries.

Mills' step-daughter wrote on ABC 57's Facebook page that her stepfather suffered severe burns to his face, chest and arms. His left arm is broken, she says, as are both eye sockets.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg visited Mills before he was flown to Indianapolis and said he is expected to recover.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is investigating the accident at the request of South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski.

The South Bend Police Department will conduct a separate internal investigation.

There's no timeline for when either investigation will be complete.
