Indianapolis To Host CFB Playoff National Championship In 2022

It will be the first time in the modern era of college football that a national championship game will be played in a city not located in the south or west.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis will be the host city for the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship Game. The game will be played at Lucas Oil Stadium on January 10, 2022.

It will be the first time in the modern era of college football that a national championship game will be played in a city not located in the south or west.

"When we created the playoff, we said we wanted to move the national championship game around," said Bill Hancock, executive director of the College Football Playoff. "We have done that. We call it 'ten in ten'—ten different communities will have hosted the national championship game in the first ten years of the playoff."

Indianapolis is one of four cities chosen to host the National Championship game after 2020, joining Miami-South Florida in 2021, Los Angeles-Inglewood in 2023, and Houston in 2024.

"Each of the four cities chosen met or exceeded our standards for selection," Hancock continued. "Each has a first-class stadium that our fans will enjoy, a great convention center, excellent hotels for teams and fans, and the communities have successful track records of hosting major events."

"This is truly significant, because the whole community stands to benefit," said Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett. "Television cameras will keep us on the national stage. Our hotels will be packed with visitors and our restaurants will be packed with hungry fans."

Visit Indy estimated the economic impact of the event to be somewhere around $150 million for the city.

List of next four CFB Playoff host cities:

2017: Tampa Bay (Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, Florida)
2018: Atlanta (Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia)
2019: Bay Area (Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara, California)
2020: New Orleans (Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana)

The College Football Playoff was first enacted to replace the old Bowl Championship Series (BCS) in 2014.
