Historic Muncie Fieldhouse Damaged in Storms

Built in 1928, the Fieldhouse is one of the largest high school gyms in the country.

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The historic Muncie Fieldhouse was damaged as storms rolled through the area Sunday afternoon.

Part of the roof was removed, causing severe flooding inside the building. A water main also broke. Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler said thousands of gallons of water gushed into the building.

Nobody was hurt, according to Chris Walker, the principal of Muncie Central High School.

Built in 1928 for more than $400,000, the Muncie Fieldhouse is one of the largest high school gymnasiums in the country. It seats more than 7,600 people.

As of early Monday morning, Muncie is still under a travel advisory due to the storm damage. About 6,000 people are without power.
