Senator Al Franken (D-MN) has announced his resignation from the U.S. Senate "in the coming weeks" following claims of sexual misconduct.

Senator Franken made his announcement Thursday morning from the floor of the U.S. Senate and did not give a specific timetable for his departure.

During his speech, Franken said some of the claims of sexual harassment against him are untrue, defended his record in the Senate, and said he has tried to be "a champion of women".

WIBC host Tony Katz spoke with radio host Stacy Washington, who told Tony that Franken's resignation is all about giving Democrats political leverage and talking points in the midterm elections.

Washington:

They have to find something to run on next year, so if [Democrats] can clean house and kick out all the guys who have ever been accused of sexual harassment, and they can run a bunch of women next year, people will be more sympathetic to women if [Democrats] can paint the Republicans as the party of pedophilia, misogyny, etc.
