About Carl Brizzi
Carl was raised in Indianapolis and attended Christ the King
Elementary School, Bishop Chatard High School, and is a graduate
of North Central High School. Carl received his BA in Political
Science from Indiana University and earned his law degree from
Valparaiso.
Carl served as a Marion County Deputy Prosecutor and Chief Prosecutor,
Metro Gang Task Force, during Scott Newman’s first term.
He has investigated and prosecuted a variety of cases from white-collar
crime to gang murder.
After working as a deputy prosecutor, Carl served as Senior Investigative
Counsel in the United States House of Representatives and co-founded
the law firm, Brizzi, Collignon & Dietrick where he focused
on investigating and preventing insurance fraud.
Carl was elected Marion County Prosecutor in November of 2002
and assumed office January 1, 2003. The overriding philosophy
of his office is that “criminals have a choice, but victims
don’t.” Carl’s comprehensive plan, the “Brizzi
Brief” focuses the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office’s
resources on prosecution, protection and prevention.
Carl works as a bipartisan and has expanded the nationally recognized
community prosecution program into the suburbs to assist the Marion
County Sheriff, combat domestic violence and protect our elderly
from abuse and fraud.
In addition to aggressive prosecution, Carl also works to prevent
crime. In October of 2003, he kicked-off the Marion County Prosecutor’s
Office Mentor Network with Colts Coach, Tony Dungy. Carl believes
that a caring relationship with an adult is the best way to keep
children on the right track. Carl created MY KID (Mentoring Youth:
Kids Improving Directions), a mentoring program that pairs one
volunteer with three middle school students and developed the
EKG (Educating Kids about Guns) program aimed at reducing youth
gun violence.
Under Carl’s leadership, the child support division set
a record for collections in 2004 – over $80 million - for
Marion County’s children. Carl also fulfilled his promise
of opening a satellite office to assist busy moms in collecting
child support.
Carl is also fiscally responsible. Despite $800,000 in budget
cuts over the last two years, the Marion County Prosecutor’s
Office has continued to charge and convict criminals by cutting
staff, eliminating and consolidating positions, and relying on
alternative sources of revenue.
Carl was recently selected by the Indianapolis Business Journal
as one of their 40 under 40. He was also awarded as Indy’s
“Best and Brightest” in the Government sector.
The Indianapolis Star named Carl as “someone to watch”
and he has been included in the Howey Political Report’s
Top 50 Most Influential People in Indiana Politics each year since
2004.
Carl lives in Washington Township with his wife Melanie and four
children: Catherine 14, Emily 11, Lauren 7 and C.J. 4.
