Donnelly Challenger Drops Out

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Martin Del Rio is dropping out of the U.S. Senate race.

Del Rio, who had wanted to take on Joe Donnelly in the primary, made the announcement on his Facebook page.

His announcement is reprinted below...

I want to take a moment to wish everyone a happy new year. I know that the holiday season often times pulls us in different directions, so I hope you all can finally take a minute to relax now that the holidays are over and we are officially in 2018.

I would like to also thank everyone who has been supporting me and braving the winter cold to canvass and help our campaign. I was not prepared for the outpouring of support and effort that many have contributed and I truly am humbled and thankful for it all. It reassured me that Hoosiers really want something different than what they have already been dealt. It reassured me that Hoosiers want a representative that does not bow down to corporations or accept corporate money. A representative that will fight for unions, universal healthcare and education. A representative that acknowledges and calls out the inequalities and fights to make a change. Hoosiers want a representative that is willing to have the tough conversations and take real action.

I want to be this representative for Hoosiers. However, as much as I would love to continue on and fight for the honor of being your Senator, I have come to the realization that I will have to take a step aside in this election. As much as it pains me to say it; as of today, I will be suspending my campaign for the United States Senate.

Throughout our brief time since announcing the campaign, we have faced many obstacles, and we have bored through them with integrity, honesty, hard work and courage. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, it is no longer possible for me to continue my campaign and be placed on the primary ballot.

Thank you all for everything you have done and please understand that regardless of the hurdles, I will still continue to do the work needed in order to advocate and make a difference in the lives of Hoosiers by focusing on the actual people first, not the party.

Thank you.
