Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb announced last week that the state would end its current six-week “Let’s all chip in and destroy the Hoosier economy to protect less than 1% of the population” effort Monday and begin an equally convoluted multi-stage “Let’s open crap back up and survey the damage” effort that is set to conclude in July.

The next time the general public heard from Eric Holcomb was Sunday night when the Governor issued a written statement to apologize for a naughty photo that captured his poor judgment and blatant hypocrisy in a single crisp moment to remember.

Governor Eric Holcomb fails to wear a mask, ignores social distancing rules at Brown County area restaurant.

Whoopsy!

You know, we all get a little emotional at times with our memories of the ‘good old days,’ but I imagine Governor Holcomb has been feeling especially nostalgic lately for the pre-digital era.

Yes, young people, there was a quaint time in our nation’s history when the only means available for consenting adults to capture their most naughty maskless moments was with a Polaroid camera – and those photos didn’t wind up on the internet because it didn’t exist. You took your photos, stuffed ’em in an envelope, and prayed to God the kids would never find ’em.

Unfortunately for the esteemed leader of our state, it’s the smartphone era now.

Thus, caught with his pants on but his mask off, Governor Eric Holcomb issued the following statement Sunday night:

“I spent the night at the Governor’s residence in Brown County. I ordered take out for dinner and ran in to pick it up, leaving my mask in the car. It was a lapse in my usual vigilance. I should have gone back out to the car to get my mask, My apologies to all the healthcare professionals and Hoosiers who are working so hard to slow the spread. This is been a timely reminder that even a six-second snap of a picture requires following the doctors’ recommendation to wear a mask while in public. Lesson learned.”

But ‘Eric’s Error’ was more than a basic SINGLE lapse in judgment.

Governor Holcomb, already an established fan of doing things in multiple complex and convoluted stages, carried that same strategy over to his little impromptu personal demonstration of poor judgment in Brown County.

Thus, with tongue planted firmly in cheek, we proudly present…

POOR JUDGMENT DONE HOLCOMB STYLE:

  1. Enter public restaurant without donning a protective mask mere HOURS after lecturing Hoosiers about the importance of social distancing and wearing face-coverings in public.
  2. Violate your own social distancing recommendations and stand RIGHT NEXT to strangers who may or may not be asymptomatic carriers of COVID-19 and are ALSO sans masks mere HOURS after lecturing Hoosiers about the importance of social distancing and wearing face-coverings in public.
  3. Without wearing gloves, touch potentially asymptomatic COVID-carrying stranger’s phone, which may or may not be shown to contain traces of fecal matter if tested under laboratory conditions, and do so mere HOURS after lecturing Hoosiers about the importance of social distancing and wearing face-coverings in public.
  4. Without hesitation, agree to take a mask-free selfie with strangers without giving a moment’s thought to the very high probability of that photo going public mere HOURS after lecturing Hoosiers about the importance of social distancing and wearing face-coverings in public.

Alright, so it was a little multi-stage mistake. As my friend and colleague Abdul-Hakim Shabazz rightly pointed out in an emotionally-stirring defense of the Governor, “Eric’s Error,” not wearing a mask is not an impeachable offense. In fact, it was a rather welcome moment of “blatant hypocrisy fun and levity” in the midst of this Holcomb-mandated multi-stage financial hell that so many Hoosier families now find themselves in.

Yes, it was a lapse in judgment at the end of a long week. He apologized and I’m willing to move on and forgive this little indiscretion.

Now, shutting down formerly-vibrant Hoosier businesses by force, willfully plunging Indiana families into financial ruin, and smiling like a take-out-munching goofball in selfies while your constituents are struggling to put food on their own tables? Yeah, not so much.
