The head of a New York state police union has hit back at lawmakers and the mainstream media for treating the law enforcement officers like “animals and thugs,” and for vilifying the profession.

Mike O’Meara, president of the New York Police Benevolent Association, stood in front of a large group of police officers at a press conference Tuesday to remind Americans that the nearly 375 million interactions between the public and the police each year are “overwhelmingly positive.”

O’Meara added that he read this week that mothers in the black community are worried about their children getting home from school without being killed by a cop.

“What world are we living in?” O’Meara raged. “That doesn’t happen. It does not happen!”

“I am not Derek Chauvin. They are not him.” he continued, referring to the Minneapolis police officer who killed George Floyd. “He killed someone. We didn’t. We are restrained.”

“Stop treating us like animals and thugs, and start treating us with some respect!” O’Meara angrily added. “That’s what we’re here today to say. We’ve been left out of the conversation. We’ve been vilified. It’s disgusting.”

Here’s the full video of Mr. O’Meara’s comments:

Last weekend, former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik claimed in an interview with Fox News that roughly 600 police officers were considering leaving the force.

Kerik and former Mayor Rudy Giuliani joined Judge Jeanine Pirro on her Fox News show over the weekend to discuss police brutality and racism within police departments.

“How many police officers are in the hospital right now that the mainstream media is not talking about?” Pirro asked at one point during the interview.

“You have some in the hospital. But there were over 300, 300 injuries. And the thing that scares me, judge, I’m hearing close to 600 cops have either put in their papers, or they’re talking to the department about resigning or retiring. Like this is insane,” Kerik said.

Officers in New York were repeatedly attacked during protests over the death of George Floyd, including one who was struck by a hit-and-run driver, one who was beaten in the Bronx, and one who was “nearly killed” when a brick was thrown at him.

Legislators might not have to defund police departments after all if there are no officers to fund in the first place.
