I love the history of THE SLIPPERY NOODLE INN! Founded in 1850 as The Tremont House. It’s listed in the National Register of Historic Places…and it’s haunted! The Slippery Noodle is Indy’s oldest continually operating bar and during the Civil War years, it was a way station for the Underground Railroad. Before it became The Slippery Noodle, it was a Speakeasy, slaughterhouse, a Bordello, and hang-out for John Dillinger. If the walls could talk, they’d tell you about many good events…and some bad events. The Slippery Noodle “spirits” certainly have tried to communicate with guests throughout the years.
JOSH CAPLINGER is the Owner & Operations Manager and The Slippery Noodle has been owned by his family since 1963 when Hal & Lorean Yeagy took ownership on Friday the 13th of December. Josh says “creepy things happen all year, not just during the spooky month of October”
How many “Spirits” live in the Slippery Noodle? .Josh says “There’s probably 4 or 5. There’s “George in the basement” and the “Shadow Man”. He haunts quite a few people. And all of the other spirits seem scared of the Shadow Man. He controls everything. A lot of Ghost Hunters have been to The Slippery Noodle and are really alarmed about how much activity we have going on in the basement. So we’re always prepared for what could possibly pop up when we’re here alone or just closing up for the night. It’s really kinda creepy.”
During our conversation, which was over the phone…when I asked about the Spirits, there was a strange interruption in the call! Maybe the Shadow Man or George in the Basement???? You can hear that interruption in the audio below.
Josh or any of the servers would be happy to give you a tour of the Slippery Noodle, just make sure to call ahead. When you #comebackdowntown, be sure to stop by and support this historic Indy treasure, and maybe see or feel something you can’t quite explain!
