10 people were injured in shootings that took place in Indianapolis over a violent weekend, 6 of whom were wounded when an unknown shooter opened fire outside the Steak N’ Shake near the intersection of Maryland and Illinois streets downtown.

The homicide rate in our city continues its unabated rise despite the efforts of law enforcement, community leaders, and elected officials. Exacerbating the problem are bi-partisan divisions and a community that’s become conditioned to a consistent level of violence.

Last weekend’s shooting near Steak N’ Shake drew attention for the number of victims who were injured and the apparently random nature of the incident. The violence is no longer isolated to so-called problem neighborhoods on the East side of Indianapolis, and anyone can become a victim.

Monday afternoon, WIBC hosts Hammer and Nigel spoke with Fraternal Order of Police President Rick Snyder about last weekend’s homicides and what it will take to make meaningful progress in the fight to reduce the murder rate in our city. Snyder returned to the program Tuesday afternoon with Rev. Charles Harrison of the Ten Point Coalition to address the causes of violence in our local community and present meaningful solutions to the problem.
