Conservative firebrand Tomi Lahren from Fox News and Fox Nation says the decision to utilize the threat of tariffs as a means of pressuring the Mexican government to secure the southern border is emblematic of President Donald Trump's willingness to do whatever is necessary to secure the interests of the American people.
"This President just keeps winning, and I think the world knows by now that this President will protect the United States of America," Lahren said during an appearance on WIBC's Hammer and Nigel Show, "and as usual, he got it done."
President Trump announced that the U.S. had reached an agreement with Mexico late last week. The deal, announced by Trump via tweet on Friday night, is said to include plans to return migrants seeking asylum to Mexico, where they will remain until their claims can be processed.
Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said Monday that his government would consider a regional asylum agreement if enforcement measures agreed to last week in Washington fail to stem the tide of migrants northward.
Lahren told Hammer and Nigel that beyond the construction of a wall, the next step in securing the southern border is for Washington lawmakers to pass meaningful immigration reforms via strong legislation.
"The biggest thing is that these people are coming across the border because they know that if they come here - especially with a family - they're going to be taken in, processed, and let go," said Lahren. "And then that court process takes anywhere from 2-4 years, and they know that in that process they can have two, three, four kids that the American people will ultimately pay for and support," she added.
Lahren says that unless the laws change and Washington sends a clear message that it's no longer business as usual, illegal immigrants will continue to pour across the southern border.
Lahren also offered perspective on the latest polling data regarding the top democratic contenders vying to take on President Trump in the 2020 election. Click the link below to hear full interview with Hammer and Nigel.
