Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser, Jr. was booked into the Hendricks County jail early Monday morning following an arrest for OWI in Avon.
According to court documents, Unser's Volkswagen Beetle was spotted by an officer on Ronald Reagan Parkway and U.S. 36, traveling at a speed of 59 mph in a 45 mph zone.
The Avon police officer who made the stop stated that Unser appeared drunk but denied having had any alcoholic drinks that night.
Court documents say Unser was asked to step out of the car, at which point he got out, "staggered to the rear of his vehicle, leaned against the trunk, stepped toward the shoulder, lost his balance, fell to the ground, and then rolled down an embankment."
Unser's arrest comes mere weeks after discussing his battle with alcoholism on the Hammer and Nigel show.
"And maybe the problem is that when Al Unser Jr. is in Indianapolis, he's treated like a God and the demons come out."
"He's a rockstar here and coming back for the party can trigger those battles. Alcoholism is a real thing and it doesn't matter if you're a plumber, a lawyer, or a race car driver. Little Al had been very public about his battle with booze, but he's got a little more work to do here."
