Biden Stands By Decision To Ignore Military Commanders’ Advice On Afghanistan
President Joe Biden returned to the White House Monday under pressure to address the nation on his decision to the American military’s combat mission Afghanistan, allowing the Taliban to immediately gain control of the nation.
The majority of Biden’s remarks were focused on blaming past administrations and Afghanistan’s military forces for the situation in the country.
“It is wrong to order American troops to step up when Afghanistan’s own armed forces would not,” Biden said of the Afghan military, which the president previously assured Americans was prepared for the exit of the U.S. military.
Biden reiterated that he stands behind his decision to ignore the advice of military commanders and the Pentagon regarding a premature exit from Afghanistan.
“I stand squarely behind my decision. After 20 years, I’ve learned the hard way that there was never a good time to withdraw US forces,” Biden said. “That’s why we’re still there. We were clear-eyed about the risks. We planned for every contingency. But I always promised the American people I would be straight with you. The truth is, this did unfold more quickly than we had anticipated.”
The president immediately boarded a helicopter at the conclusion of his remarks to resume his retreat at Camp David.
