Two IMPD officers were stabbed on the city’s near northeast side overnight in what police called an “unprovoked” attack.
According to IMPD Deputy Chief Chris Bailey, the officers responded to a 911 call at a home along Fairfield Avenue near the intersection of 38th and Fall Creek where they were met there by a man identified as 20-year-old Deonta Williams.
“Officers came into contact with an adult male who reported that another individual was harassing him somewhere down the street,” Bailey said. “As the officers turned, the man who turned out to be the suspect, stabbed both officers.”
One officer was stabbed in the neck and the other was stabbed in the chest.
Officers immediately gave the suspect verbal commands. When the suspect failed to comply, the officers discharged their weapons.
Both officers were taken to a local hospital for treatment. One was released Wednesday. The other is in stable condition and is expected to remain in the hospital for a couple of days.
The suspect was taken to IU Health Methodist and is listed in stable condition.
This brazen attack on two members of our law enforcement community “is a disturbing reminder of the danger and the hell these officers have to go through on a daily basis,” WIBC’s Jason Hammer noted Wednesday. “And they know they’re going to get zero support from the [Hogsett] administration and this city.”
