A Fulton County judge granted bond to a former Atlanta police officer charged with murder in the shooting of Rayshard Brooks.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Jane Barwick issued a $500,000 bond for Garrett Rolfe. Barwick said Rolfe’s ties to the community had been demonstrated to the court’s satisfaction in regards to being not a flight risk.

Rolfe must adhere to the following restrictions as a condition of his parole:

  • Must wear an ankle monitor
  • Will have a curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. with exceptions for work, legal or medical
  • Must surrender his passport
  • Not allowed to possess or carry any firearms
  • Will not have any contact with family members of Rayshard Brooks or any witnesses, including the three other victims in the case
  • Will not have any contact with other police officers

Rolfe, 27, faces 11 charges in all, including felony murder, punishable by a minimum sentence of life in prison.

Police body cameras showed Rolfe and another officer, Devin Brosnan, having a calm and respectful conversation with Brooks for more than 40 minutes after complaints that Brooks had fallen asleep in his car in a Wendy’s drive-thru lane on June 12.

Brooks was later informed that he’d had too much to drink and officers attempted to handcuff him. Brooks resisted at that time and began to struggle before grabbing one of the officer’s tasers. Brooks fired the taser at Rolfe as he ran away, prompting the officer to return fire.

An autopsy found Brooks was shot twice in the back.

Rolfe was fired and the other officer, Devin Brosnan, was placed on desk duty. The police chief stepped down less than 24 hours after the shooting.
