A 4-year-old child was taken to Riley Hospital for Children and is in stable condition Wednesday after being shot in the leg on the Northeast side of Indianapolis.
Officers were called to a house on East 42nd Street, between Post Road and Mitthoeffer Road around 1 am after an unknown shooter fired bullets into the home.
A 14-year-old who was also inside the home was initially believed to have been grazed by a bullet; however, it was later determined that the teenager’s injuries were likely from debris and not consistent with a gunshot wound.
Wednesday’s shooting comes less than a week after 12-year old Day’Shawn Bills was shot and killed by a stray bullet while playing video games inside his grandmother’s home on the Northeast side.
Community activist Antonio Patton delivered a powerful message to the community in the wake of that shooting:
Indianapolis has logged more than 100 homicides and 500 people shot or stabbed in the first five months of 2021.
Rev. Charles Harrison of Indy Ten Point Coalition told Hammer and Nigel Monday that violence in the city of Indianapolis might have reached the point of no return.
“I’ve spoken with a lot of leaders in the city over the last 24 hours and the question becomes whether or not we can put this genie back in the bottle,” said Harrison.
WIBC’s Hammer and Nigel offered commentary Wednesday afternoon on what it will take to get the violence under control in the city.
