The suspect who shot an IMPD officer on the southeast side of downtown overnight had a prior record and was on bail awaiting trial on a felony drug charge.
Indianapolis Metro Police received a call at approximately 10:00 p.m. Sunday about an accident that had happened in an alley in Fountain Square along Woodlawn Ave.
When officers arrived at the scene, they confronted a man who matched the description of the suspect police were given.
The suspect ran from officers and an exchange of gunfire between at least one officer and the suspect ensued.
One of the officers chasing the suspect was hit by gunfire, as was the suspect.
The officer who was shot is in serious, but stable condition.
Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett hours after the shooting offered his prayers and praised IMPD’s bravery in a tweet.
“In the face of danger, the officers of (IMPD) put their lives on the line to keep our community safe. Tonight we bear witness to that selfless action. Our prayers are with the officer shot, his loved ones, and the entire IMPD family,” Hogsett tweeted.
In 2021, an officer was shot every 25 hours in the U.S. and there was a 115% increase in ambush attacks on officers. This January, there was a 67% increase in officers shot in the line of duty.
