Yes, you read that right: AUGUST. It’s officially the first week of August 2018 and we have a checklist to help you get the most out of your lawn and gardens this month without completely feeling overwhelmed.

Water

We’ve had record setting temperatures this summer that means your plants need to hydrate. Keep all trees, perennials, grass, and your garden well-watered everyday so they can rejuvenate and get that healthy looking green!

Harvest

August is a big month for harvesting a lot of your spring/summer veggies and fruits. These include:

  • Onions (tops should be yellow)
  • Potatoes (tops should be yellow)
  • Beans
  • Tomatoes
  • Peppers
  • Squash
  • Sweet corn

Note: According to Purdue Agriculture Extension corn is ready when the kernels are plump and ooze a milky juice when punctured with a fingernail.

  • Watermelon

Note: Hoosier Gardener, Jo Ellen says when the underside ground spot turns from whitish to creamy yellow that’s when you know to harvest. Melon should also produce a dull thud rather than a ringing sound when thumped.

  • Pears (should be light green, not dark)

Plant

  • Now is a great time to start seeding your lawn if you see any bare spots. Late August and September is a great time if you are looking to repair your lawn.
  • It’s not too late to start growing your own produce. Now is the time to sow seeds for carrots, beets, kale and snap beans. Towards the end of the month you can also sow lettuce, spinach and green onions.

If you have anything to add to the checklist or specific questions about your home and garden send us a message on Facebook!
