Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s beloved ‘Tax the Rich’ dress designer is not only a gifted designer; she’s also a rich, back taxes-owing hypocrite.
Designer Aurora James, the 37-year-old ‘fashionista’ – fancy talk for “sews for a living” – is a notorious tax deadbeat with unpaid debts in multiple states.
Let’s journey through Aurora James’ exquisite history of skipping out on paying taxes:
Item 1: According to the New York Post, James’ company racked up three open tax warrants in New York state for failing to withhold income taxes from employees’ paychecks.
The Total: $14,798.
The Status: The company has been hit with 15 warrants in total since 2015 but has yet to pay up.
Item 2: Between April 2018 and April 2019, the Internal Revenue Service placed six federal liens on James’ Cultural Brokerage Agency. The liens specifically cite the company’s failure to remit employee payroll taxes.
The Total: $103,220.
The Status: The IRS declined to comment on their current status – code for “she hasn’t paid it yet, but we’re not allowed to tell you that.”
Item 3: James enjoys TAKING money from taxpayers as much as she loves not paying her fair share. Her company received a massive amount of pandemic relief aid in 2020.
The Total: $41,666 in Federal Aid.
The Status: James owes a crapload of taxes, but she has no plans to use the free tax money from taxpayers to pay her back taxes. Taking is much more fun than paying into the pot.
Item 4: In October 2019 the state Worker’s Compensation Board slapped the company with a $17,000 fine for not carrying worker’s-comp insurance between March 2017 and February 2018. The fine has incurred penalties and is now much more than a $17,000 fine.
The Total: $62,722
The Status: No payments have been received to date.
Item 5, Screwing Private Citizens: In August 2020, James’ landlord filed papers to evict Brother Vellies from their location at 71 Franklin St. in Brooklyn, as well as demanding more than $25,000 plus interest for staying beyond the end of her lease. The case was settled.
Item 6, Screwing Private Citizens 2.0: James was sued by a previous landlord in February 2018 for more than $5,000 in unpaid rent at her shop’s old address at 209 West 38th Street in Manhattan.
Living The Dream: James scooped up a $1.6 million residence in Los Angeles in September 2020 – the height of the pandemic.
Item 7: James property is already listed as “delinquent” by the Los Angeles County assessor’s office.
The Total: $2,504 in unpaid property taxes.
