The city of Gary has replaced Columbus Day with a holiday honoring its late Mayor Richard Hatcher.

The Gary Common Council voted 8-1 last Tuesday in favor a resolution making Richard Gordon Hatcher Day the second Monday of October for city employees.

Hatcher, elected in 1967, was one of the first Black mayors of a big U.S. city, so it makes sense to honor him with a special holiday in Gary. The problem, however, is the elimination of Columbus Day to do it.

WIBC host Tony Katz weighed in on the issue Monday.

“This is woke nonsense,” Katz told listeners. “The council did nothing to bring more people to Gary, Indiana with their vote. So why did they do it?”

He continued: “For all of the problems that Gary, Indiana has, this is the issue you chose to tackle? Honor mayor, fine. But to do it in a way that creates such division does not to improve the lives of the citizens in Gary.

“All I want to do is talk about what’s right with Gary and the need to grow that city to create opportunity. And what are they doing? Showing the country and the state that you’re not serious.”

Prediction: There will never be a day in Indianapolis to honor Mayor Joe Hogsett. We might have a parade when he’s finally out, however.
