Governor Eric Holcomb has vetoed a bill that would have banned transgender girls from participating in girls school sports teams. House Bill 1041 was passed by the House and Senate, but Holcomb decided against legislation Monday.

Holcomb stated that the IHSSA, Indiana High School Athletics Association, had not indicated there was an unfairness. The governor says he believes the current process of the IHSAA is enough as is. In a letter to House Speaker Todd Huston, Holcomb says there is no immediate need for the bill.

“The presumption of the policy laid out in HEA 1041 is that there is an existing problem in K-12 sports in Indiana that requires further state government intervention. It implies that the goals of consistency and fairness in competitive female sports are not currently being met. After thorough review, I find no evidence to support either claim even if I support the overall goal.”

Tony Katz says Holcomb’s decision is not just disappointing, but an attack on women.

“Governor Holcomb’s failing of young women in this state is almost as shocking as the Indiana Democratic Party lying about what the legislation is.”
