Indiana Rep. Andre Carson said in a conference call with other Democrats on Monday that he was inspired by the bravery of Rep. Ilhan Omar as she faces “hatred and Islamophobia” in the wake of her comments before the Council on American-Islamic Relations last month.

Rep. Omar said in her speech that the council was created after 9/11 “because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.”

On Friday, President Trump tweeted a video of her remarks along with footage of the attacks.

Rep. Carson implied during Monday’s conference call that the President’s tweet is directly responsible for the subsequent death threats directed at Rep. Omar.

“For the President of the United States to use the images of that day to smear Representative Omar as a means to score cheap political points, to shore up support amongst his base is just plain wrong,” Carson said. “Especially as a New Yorker — you think he’d know better. While this attack on her is particularly egregious, it isn’t surprising.”

WIBC host Tony Katz:

“It’s fascinating that Rep. Carson has gone out of his way to condemn this, because it proves that he actually knows how to condemn things. Now, let’s do Louis Farrakhan, shall we?  Can we please, Congressman Carson, condemn Louis Farrakhan calling Jews ‘termites’? Come on, you’re the moral Andre Carson, right? Let’s go to work! You’re going to condemn the President? Sure. Absolutely, knock yourself out! Now condemn Farrakhan.”
