Dr. Jennifer McCormick shocked a lot of people when she announced recently that she would not seek another term as Indiana State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

McCormick made the surprising announcement in a press conference earlier this month, where she likened her time in office to "dog years" and blamed the state’s governance structure for her desire to leave the post.

She said discussion around her future had become a distraction.

"That noise can be a problem and that can be distracting and I have no patience for that," she said, "because I got into this office because I said I want to do what's right for kids."

WIBC host Tony Katz spoke with Dr. McCormick Thursday morning about her decision to not seek re-election, expressing frustration at how government bureaucracy hindered her ability to effectively perform the essential functions of her job:

"A lot of it is driven by special interest groups, which makes it very difficult. The system itself can really become a distraction, and it severely limits our ability to serve the students who move through that system.

...One thing that needs to change is the design of the state board; it needs to change, the structure needs to change. For example, we have a Director of Accountability who does a great job, but she's not always consulted when we have discussions and issues related to accountability that need to be addressed. That's a problem. We have a lot of competent experts in the field who are doing the work, but are absent in the conversations that are taking place with the state board and the powers that be."
