Nothing says music festival like a politician interrupting to discuss climate change! Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s surprise appearance at the Global Citizen’s concert proved just that this weekend as she was met with boos and hecklers.
During the concert, host Priyanka Chopra Jonas took a moment to welcome Pelosi to the stage. Immediately the crowd displayed a range of reactions, but with mostly loud booing.
The House Speaker attempted to address climate change and cutting carbon emissions; however, was hard to hear over the consistent heckling.
“As speaker of the House, I am here to thank you for your dazzling advocacy, entrepreneurial thinking, and determination as global citizens. “It’s thanks to your help that the United States recently enacted historic climate legislation, which will be a game changer. It will slash carbon pollution by 40% by 2030, it will give a historic, an historic $370 billion to fight the climate crisis…”
Pelosi quickly wrapped up her speech by acknowledging her grandchildren in the audience and promising not to take up any more time.
The annual music festival offers free tickets to thousands of fans who take action in helping with extreme poverty. This year the festival line-up included Metallica, Usher, Mariah Carey and the Jonas Brothers.
