South Bend Mayor and 2020 Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg has denounced Alabama’s controversial abortion law on Twitter Wednesday, asserting that the bill “ignores science” and “punishes women.”
The Alabama Senate passed a bill this week that makes most abortions in the state at any point during pregnancy illegal – including pregnancies resulting from rape or incest.
“The Alabama legislature is ignoring science, criminalizing abortion, and punishing women,” Buttigieg said in the tweet. “Instead, the government’s role should be to make sure all women have access to comprehensive affordable care, and that includes safe and legal abortion.”

Wednesday evening, Buttigieg also shared a tweet from the Yellowhammer Fund account, which claimed: “#Abortion is a human right, at every stage & for every reason.” The account’s bio reads: “We fund abortion and build power in Alabama.”
#Abortion is a human right, at every stage & for every reason. We hope our state Senators will read Jenna King-Shepherd & Dina Zirlott’s words & understand that abortion is necessary for the well-being of pregnant ppl & children. #StopTheBans #alpolitics https://t.co/uhdrloZjgT

WIBC host Tony Katz offers his perspective in today’s Popcorn Moment.
“Abortion is not about reproductive health because abortion is not about reproduction. I think the reason you’re seeing this from various states around the country is because they want to challenge Roe V. Wade, which I am fine with. But the idea that abortion is reproductive rights is talking points and not fact; we just gotta be clear about that.
But if Buttigieg wants to claim that government shouldn’t be with this subject, then why would you defend Roe V. Wade, which is government getting involved in this subject?”
