Fox News is cleaning house. The network fired 16 employees Wednesday including political editor Chris Stirewalt, who defended the network’s Arizona election call that angered Trump.

The network said the layoffs were part of a restructuring; however, insiders called it a calculated “purge” as the network, moves from traditional news coverage to more conservative opinion segments.

“There is a concerted effort to get rid of real journalists,” a former staffer told The Daily Beast. “They laid capable people off who were actual journalists and not blind followers.”

Stirewalt, who was laid off Tuesday night, became a pariah among the network’s viewers after he defended an early projection on election night that Joe Biden would win the state of Arizona based on an analysis by Fox News’ Decision Desk.

President Donald Trump was angered by the Arizona call and pressured the network to make a retraction.

Stirewalt, however, refused to reverse the call, even as other Fox hosts expressed criticism.  The political editor also pushed back on Trump’s claims of election fraud.

WIBC host Tony Katz, a frequent guest on the network, offered commentary on the firings Wednesday. Click below to listen.
