First off, let’s get this out of the way. Trump did not directly say if he would run of president, but he certainly hinted towards the idea.

As he closed the convention, he teases the excited crowd with “Who knows? I might even decide to beat them for a third time”

And as far as starting a new party? Trump proudly sticks with the Republicans.

“We have the Republican Party, it’s going to reunite and be stronger than ever before. I am not starting a new party.”

Secondly, the convention showed that support for Trump is still prevalent and strong. The famous CPAC Straw Poll showed that 55% of attendees would vote for Trump to run in 2024.  Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis landed in second place with 21% support.

What was more telling was when the poll revealed 95% said they wanted the Republican Party to advance Trump’s policies and agenda than endorsed him running again. Even though Trump polled lower in the hypothetical GOP nominee vote, the support and job review of his policies remain immensely high. Tony Katz wonders if that indicates where the party’s headed.

“The question I’ve been asking as I’ve been watching is “what do these people want more? Do they want Trump the person or do they want Trump the fighter? And how to take that fight and bring it to other candidates.”

And finally the ultimate question of is there a civil war within the party? Tony got his answer.

“Not according to the activists. They think it’s over and they’ve already won. They don’t care about Liz Cheney or Mitt Romney at all.”

And that’s just scratching the surface of Tony’s time from CPAC 2021.
