The Trump administration rolled out a new federal regulation Tuesday that officially banned so-called bump stocks.
Those who possess the devices, which make it easier to fire rounds from a semi-automatic weapon by harnessing the gun’s recoil to “bump” the trigger faster, will have 90 days to turn in or otherwise destroy them from the date that the final rule is published in the federal register – likely this Friday – according to senior DOJ officials.
As expected, gun-rights advocates are outraged by the ban.
Clark Aposhian, chairman of the Utah Shooting Sports Council, told the Salt Lake Tribune that banning bump stocks will do little to quell mass shootings.
“They were just looking for a scapegoat. And they found one,” Aposhian said.
Meanwhile, Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi say the ban on bump stocks doesn’t go far enough.

“There is no moment when I favor the banning of things. I don’t believe that we are ever a safer society because we ban something. It’s why I never go down the road when something bad happens of saying we need to limit the rights of the people.
…There is no society that has ever been better off by taking away the rights of the people.”
