Covington Catholic High School is closed Tuesday amid safety concerns for students at the center of a viral video controversy at last week’s March for Life rally.
WIBC host Tony Katz spoke with Fox News Correspondent Doug McKelway Tuesday, who was on school grounds in Kentucky and observed much of the interaction between protesters who were present.
McKelway:
“There have been hundreds of threats against these kids, which forced school officials to cancel classes out of concern for their safety.
For the most part, demonstrators, protestors have been peaceful and the morning has been without incident. There were 30-40 Native Americans and their supporters as well as Trump supporters and supporters of these kids. There were a couple of minor flare ups, but for the most part, it’s been respectful. In fact, a cameraman for the Fox News affiliate down here informed me that he actually captured footage of a man in a MAGA hat shaking hands with a Native American.
The bottom line, however, is that a lot of damage has been done to these kids and in the digital age, it’s going to be extremely difficult for them to shake it.”
Many of the students have received death threats, according to McKelway.
“There have been comments that they were going to barricade the school doors, light it on fire. But a lot of [the threats] have been really vile.”
Parents of the students have hired attorneys and are planning to file defamation lawsuits.
