The House's longest-serving member, Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), announced that he would retire Tuesday following reports that he inappropriately touched female staffers and that he used taxpayer money to settle a sexual harassment and wrongful dismissal complaint in 2015.
In his announcement, Conyers also endorsed his son, John Conyers III, to replace him.
WIBC host Tony Katz rebuked Conyers and reminded listeners that we've seen what happens when politics becomes a family affair.
Allow me to be as clear as possible. I live in Indianapolis, Indiana, and we have seen what happens when an elected position gets treated like a family heirloom. We have seen what happens and it goes from Julia to Andre - the Congressional seat right here in Indianapolis. Of what value is that to the people that we keep it in the family, that we create these dynasties?
Congress should not be a family affair where the elected position is passed down through the generations.
