A Rational Look at the Gun Debate: Emotions Versus Reality

Cam Edwards, NRA News: "We're all horrified by Las Vegas, not just the anti-gun movement."

This week's tragic mass shooting in Las Vegas claimed 59 lives and predictably fueled calls for Washington to reform existing gun laws and impose tighter restrictions on the sale and ownership of firearms.

WIBC host Tony Katz spoke with Cam Edwards of NRA News Wednesday, who encouraged listeners to put emotion aside and engage in dialogue and understanding with those who are on the other side of the gun debate.

Edwards:

Try to get to know the people that you want to demonize. Because I think that what you would find is that when it comes to our reaction as Americans to the attack in Las Vegas, no matter where you stand on the gun issue, we're all horrified. None of us want to see something like this happen, and ultimately, our disagreements do boil down to policy debate.

Edwards also cautioned against the knee-jerk passage of new gun legislation.

Policy debates should be conducted with rational thought and some civil discourse because that's when we get the best results.

...What we don't want to do is to do something under the guise of public safety that isn't going to work, would be unconstitutional, and would be done with that emotional drive.
