I-465 Is Dead To Me

I-465 closures start next week on the southeast side.

You’re a dog, I-465. Way to roll over like the rest of them.

You can take your fancy resurfacing project and lodge it up your gore point. Abandoning us on the southeast side? Don’t expect a candygram. You’re filth. Excrement from a motherless goat. You chose the dark side, and lonely days are ahead of you my friend. You sellout. You sewer rat. You’re Aerosmith singing the Armageddon song. You’re a Chicago ballad from the 1980s. Take your acolytes I-65 and I-70 and start a cult far away from here. Bark at the moon. Sacrifice a virgin. You’re a flunky. This construction season is a sadomasicist’s wet dream complete with soldering iron and flap of skin. Yet there you are, I-465, and there you go. You took them dives for the short end money. You could have had class,  you could have been a contender.

I-465, you’re dead to me.

On to the closure. It starts Friday.

In order to fix the interstate after last winter’s pothole party, I-465 will be closed in increments on the southeast side for fresh pavement and other repairs:

  • First, eastbound/northbound I-465 will close from I-65 (south side) to I-70 (east side) on Friday, August 9th at 9pm, and will reopen Saturday, August 24th at 11:59pm.
  • Second, southbound/westbound I-465 will close from I-70 (east side) to I-65 (south side) on Friday, September 6th at 9pm, and will reopen Saturday, September 21st at 11:59pm.

The map shows all:

I-465 SE Side Closure

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has offered up a couple of reroutes for the first closure:

  • Through traffic: Take eastbound I-70 to northbound I-65/70 downtown. In the north split, continue on eastbound I-70 to northbound I-465.
  • Downtown to I-74: Take eastbound Southeastern Ave. to the southeast side, then merge onto eastbound I-74.

Here's a way too colorful map. It's what happens when Ma sends me a box of crayons for my birthday:

ReroutesIf you're If If you're incorporating city streets into your northbound I-465 reroute, Emerson Ave, Arlington Ave, Shadeland Ave, Franklin Rd, and Post Rd. are all in play. Eastbound I-465 rerouters can use 10th St, Washington St, English Ave. to Brookville Rd, or Raymond St.

As always with a closure, the traffic has to go somewhere, meaning some of these reroutes will get extra beefy,

Plan accordingly.

We'll dig into detours for the second half of the closure before too long. Also, Central Ave. Bridge over Fall Creek is still closed because Michelangelo is painting the surface deck or something. And, the completely noncontroversial Red Line opens Labor Day weekend, and if you're as puzzled as I am about crossing through the "Bus Only" lanes to turn, hit me up @WIBCTraffic. We'll ponder. We'll commiserate. We'll tell tales of yesterlore.

Thank you. Good luck.
