As of this week (11/18), traffic started moving on the brand spankin’ new Keystone Pkwy. bridge over 96th St., kind of a milestone for an infrastructure overhaul on the 96th St. corridor that began in earnest in 2017.

***UPDATE: The northbound lanes on the Keystone Pkwy. bridge over 96th St. have NOT opened, and it sounds like they have a little more work to do.  Southbound lanes opened Wednesday.

Additionally, the interchange at Keystone and 96th St. is on pace to be fully functional by the end of the year, which is a glorious end to a manic construction season riddled by several projects that overshot their expected end dates.

“Barring some major ice storm or stuff like that, the commitment is to have full functionality on the traffic flowing in all directions by the end of the year,” says Dan McFeely, who does economic development and public relations for the city of Carmel.

We’ve already seen an improvement in safety and traffic flow in the area. Before the overhaul, Keystone at 96th St. was not only a parking lot during peak rush times, but also a poor man’s demolition derby in all degrees of sunlight. The intersection couldn’t safely manage the volume of residential and commercial traffic that 96th St. demanded, especially when factoring in the customer base of "dealership row" east of Keystone.

So the bridge is humming, now what? McFeely says that work will move to the ramps that carry traffic on and off Keystone. After that, 96th St. will get its finishing touches, including the opening of two new roundabouts under the bridge that distribute traffic to and from Keystone Pkwy.

Left turns will continue to be restricted, for now.

It’s worth mentioning that Keystone at 96th is Carmel’s baby, start to finish, so good on them for digging in and wrapping up (hopefully) as planned.
