The interstate gods offered a rare smile and wink to the weary commuters of Indianapolis by opening a major part of the downtown I-65 closure nearly a week early. As of Monday afternoon, the West St. bridge rehabilitation project was completed and the ramps reopened for business – just in time for evening rush:

Here’s the latest on the I-65 closures, named appropriately #I65Sucks by @WIBCTraffic and listeners alike:

  • West St. on/off-ramps are now open and completely accessible, and commuters can travel either northbound or southbound freely with interruption or closures.
  • Southbound I-65 is still closed at 21st St, as commuters are forced off at the 21st St. off-ramp.
  • Northbound I-65 is still closed at Meridian St/Pennsylvania St. (Exit 113), as commuters are forced off at Meridian St/Penn.
  • Southbound I-65 is still closed at I-465 on the northwest side – or Pike Township – forcing drivers to reroute on I-465 or I-865.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) says the rest of the project is on schedule to be finished this Sunday.

Needless to say, this is a huge break for the 60,000+ traveling in and out of downtown Indianapolis this week for Gen Con.
