Happy New Year! Meridian St. Is Closed!

Indy's central commuter route closes from 28th St. to 29th St. for a very long time.

Great! Happy New Year!

Now let’s close Meridian St.

On Tuesday, January 2nd, Indy's heavily traveled central corridor will close in both directions from 28th to 29th St.  In addition – and less consequential – 28th St. will close east of Illinois St. to Talbott St. It’s all part of the DigIndy tunnel project, which will help the marsh called Fall Creek be less of an excrement drop zone and more of a fresh water creek. You know, the kind coyotes and mountain lions drink from.

The Meridian St. closure is expected to be completed by October 31st of 2018. The entire DigIndy project will carry on until 2025, which makes me wonder what’s in store after Meridian St. is ripped apart and put back together again.

Here’s a fancy map of the closure area:

Here are the detours that will be posted on Tuesday after the closure. Information is courtesy of the Department of Public Works (DPW):

Keep in mind that Central Ave. Bridge is also closed until late 2018 – a closure that’s helped turned Fall Creek Pkwy N. into a parking lot on more than one occasion:

Note: According to Citizens Energy, Meridian St. will not close until after the morning rush Tuesday, giving afternoon commuters first crack at their new traffic patterns for the next ten months. In the meantime, we’ll keep a hawk eye on any changes to the plan before and during the project.

Be sure to shoot me a tweet and communicate your experiences with the closure, reroute, etc. Let's pool our resources and try to make this as painless as possible. As always, I’m at @WIBCTraffic. See you there.

Ready or not, Red Line construction begins this year. The high speed bus system will run from Broad Ripple to University of Indianapolis, and is scheduled to open sometime in 2019. The unknown includes specifics on the construction schedule, as in start and completion dates and when each neighborhood along the route will be affected.

IndyGo – the managing body of the Red Line – has scheduled several public meetings in January and February. During the meetings, the construction plan will be detailed and participants will have a chance to ask questions and meet the construction team. Here’s the schedule, courtesy of

This has become a really cool thing. It’s the Downtown Indy, Inc 4th Annual New Year’s Eve Celebration presented by the Indiana Union Construction Industry.  It's on from 9:00pm to 12:30am, and features plenty of food, drink, and a unique party atmosphere in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. The highlight is the dropping of an Indycar to ring in 2018 - our own local little spin on the ball drop in Times Square. One notable change this year: the celebration will be moved from Georgia St. and Pennsylvania St. to Georgia St. and Meridian St due to construction.

Did we mention it’s going to be -4 degrees Sunday night? Yes, it’s going to be -4 degrees Sunday night, making it a little more than heavy jacket weather. Wear a quilt. Stuff your shirt with a pillow.

Traffic: Downtown is going to be unbelievable. Georgia Street will be closed, and expect S. Meridian St. in the WholeSale District to be closed in part, also. It’s going to be a great time, unless you’re stuck in gridlock. Then again, at least you’ll have heat. Unless your heater goes out. Remember what Stephen Stills once sang - "Love the One You're with."

By the way, I’m not in bed with any of these people, but just in case…

And here…

In my early 20’s - many lifetimes ago – I got clicked for an O.W.I. (operating while intoxicated) in northern Indiana. I blew a .15 – twice the legal limit -  and was arrested and thrown in the drunk tank. There was also the issue of totaling my car after blowing out a tire and plowing into a row of mailboxes. Sparks and fire were flying out of the back of my car like an uncool and sexless Marty McFly driving a Pontiac instead of a DeLorean. I drove a full mile because, you know, drunk.

I was ashamed, and what followed was some well-earned regret. Worst, I could have killed somebody, but then it's disappointing the people that care about you, and eventually the flurry of problems associated with a drunk driving arrest - like your driver's license being revoked, lawyer fees, community service, and probation.

It’s a selfish act – this drunk driving thing.  I was dumb.

Even if you don’t use car sharing services, program the numbers of a couple of Indy cab companies and have them ready and handy before going out on New Year’s Eve. I’d even call the company in advance to check on availability, best pickup locations, wait times, etc. If you do use car sharing services, make sure the app is up to date, and take a second to check for pickup and drop off boxes – like they use for major sporting events.

Be safe, and my best in 2018.

Next blog is about IKEA, because I heard it's opening soon.
