It’s the preseason where everything’s made up and the points don’t matter. Okay that’s not entirely true, but with the preseason being deemphasized year over year can you still learn something from these games?

For your starters, unless you have the Week 1 unit fully healthy out there AND they are going up against a fully healthy Week 1 starting defensive unit it’s hard to have major takeaways.

When you move to second and third units and guys fighting for a spot on the roster, that’s where things get interesting.

These are the position battles that can add depth and bring about contributions from role players throughout the season. There’s real drama at play over the next few weeks for those guys and it’s one of the reasons the NFL pumps up Hard Knocks every year.

The Colts aren’t the feature team in Hard Knocks this year, but they will be involved with it to an extent this week as they practice and play 2022 Hard Knocks feature team the Detroit Lions.

Speaking of Colts-Lions, Colts postgame show host and preseason tv broadcaster Greg Rakestraw joined The Dan Dakich Show on Monday to share how Colts fans can learn the most about their team this week as they prepare for joint practices with Detroit.

Additionally, during our conversation with Greg we discussed:

  • the play on both sides of the ball against Buffalo
  • how Greg feels about the WR room
  • why you usually can’t have major proclamations for starters in the preseason
  • where Colts fans can learn the most this week
  • what to expect during joint practices with the Lions this week
