Brickyard Pit Stop Paddle Fest on the Canal
On Thursday, Aug. 22, the Downtown Canal will take center stage as it plays host for the second annual Downtown Indy, Inc.’s Brickyard Pit Stop Paddle competition. Businesses, friends and families are forming teams of eight to race in pedal boats on a portion of the Canal. And making bigger waves this year is the NEW Brickyard Pit Stop Paddle Fest! A free public concert will take place during the event featuring My Yellow Rickshaw.
Races will start at 5 p.m. and are structured with four team members starting near the Ohio Street bridge, pedaling and paddling to the New York Street bridge to switch places with the four remaining team members to race back to the start. The single-elimination bracket will narrow down Indy’s best and culminate in a championship race between the top two teams. The event should conclude by 6:30 p.m.
The winning team receives the Grand Prize: 16 tickets to the Big Machine Vodka 400 at the Brickyard Powered by Florida Georgia Line race (Sept. 8), eight Wheel Fun Rentals pedal boat rides, eight VIP Sunset Cinema on the Canal experiences to view Grease and bragging rights.
“In the spirit of the Big Machine Vodka 400 at the Brickyard, this unique event engages the community and brings a racing competition for some healthy fun,” said Bob Schultz, senior vice president of marketing, communication and events for Downtown Indy, Inc. “And live music will add an extra level of excitement with the free concert this year. We’re always thrilled to partner with our friends at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Wheel Fun Rentals.”
Registration for Downtown Indy, Inc.’s Brickyard Pit Stop Paddle is $80/team (or $70 for Downtown Indy, Inc. members using code DIIMEMBER). Teams are comprised of eight members. All proceeds benefit Downtown beautification and décor.
All spectators are invited to come to the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center – Canal level (Brickyard Pit Stop Paddle Fest HQ) for food options and a bar from 4:30 – 7 p.m., as well as the new Paddle Fest concert.
“There will be great racing on the oval and dirt track at IMS during the Brickyard/BC 39 week, and the Pit Stop Paddle in Downtown Indianapolis will set the stage for that event and highlight the competitive spirit that flows through every Hoosier,” said Doug Boles, Indianapolis Motor Speedway president. “We look forward to good-natured racing and fun for everyone Aug. 22 on the Canal and appreciate our beneficial partnership with Downtown Indy.”
