MINNEAPOLIS–The verdict is in in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. The jury found Chauvin guilty of second and third degree murder and second degree manslaughter just about 12 hours after getting the case from Judge Peter Cahill.

The conviction is for the murder of George Floyd in 2020, which the jury found was likely due to Chauvin’s treatment of Floyd by kneeling on his neck during an arrest.

The second-degree murder charge carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison, but Minnesota sentencing guidelines say someone with no prior conviction like Chauvin could be sentenced to 12-and-a-half years. The sentencing is up to the judge and will take place at a later date.

Floyd’s death was the subject of riots in Indianapolis and Ft. Wayne last year, and in other cities across the country.
