Republican representatives say they will not address gas and property tax relief on May 24th’s technical correction day in the Indiana Senate.

A party spokesperson told IndyPolitics’ Abdul-Hakim Shabazz that May 24th can only be used to address issues from the previous session.

The statement comes after Republicans resisted a push by Democrats in March for a gas tax suspension as national gasoline prices breached an all-new record high.

Motorists in Indiana are now paying about 56 cents per gallon in state taxes on gasoline — the highest-ever level shown in state records — and it will increase next month based on rising fuel prices.

Democrats have been calling over the past week for Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb to issue an emergency order suspending the gas tax, but Holcomb maintains he doesn’t have the authority to do so.

“For an Indiana governor to suspend the gas tax through a declaration of an energy emergency, the state must have an existing or projected energy shortfall that would jeopardize life, health, and property,” Holcomb said in a statement. “We have not met that threshold.”
