PRINCETON, N.J. — The Ivy League has canceled it’s all of its winter sports seasons because of the recent surge in coronavirus throughout the U.S.

The League also announced fall sports will not take place during the spring semester, and spring sports are postponed through at least the end of February. The decision was made unanimously by the Ivy League Council of Presidents.

“Throughout the last nine months, we have asked our campus communities to make extraordinary adjustments in order to do our part in combating the global pandemic and to safeguard the health and well being of our students, faculty members, staff and the communities in which they live and work,” the Ivy League Council of Presidents said in a joint statement Thursday.

The Ivy League was among the first conferences in the country to cancel its spring and fall sports seasons earlier this year.

“Regrettably, the current trends regarding transmission of the COVID-19 virus and subsequent protocols that must be put in place are impeding our strong desire to return to intercollegiate athletics competition in a safe manner,” the presidents said. “Student-athletes, their families, and coaches are again being asked to make enormous sacrifices for the good of public health.”

The council said athletes can continue to train and practice as long as it is done so in accordance with their institution’s health and safety guidelines. They also said that all-student athletes affected by this shut down will not lose a year of eligibility.
