Ramps Closed 38th

38th St. Ramps Reopening

In early July, the ramps at 38th St. and Kessler Blvd. closed for a restoration project, and drivers have been treated to a labyrinth of reroutes around the 38th St/I-65 corridor on the northwest side ever since.

This created another traffic splurge in the Indianapolis metro area, during a construction season that’s been… let’s say… animated.

But through some heady questioning from a @WIBCTraffic listener, we found out the ramp project is nearing its end and the ramps will reopen soon:

That’s good news! All of the 38th St/Kessler ramps are scheduled to reopen by Tuesday, September 17th. Rejoice – call someone you love.

Yeah, but that’s not it. We have a host of weekend road work to deal, and a stretch of I-70 that became infamous as a result of the I-465 closure. In fact, let’s go ahead and say that…

I-465 Closure

The I-465 closure on the southeast side is in place for another week (Southbound/Westbound lanes, I-70 to I-65), meaning inbound I-70 will continue being the absolute worst stretch of interstate in Indianapolis. Traffic brews up well before peak rush hour times and continues to mess with us throughout the day.

Take a look. This is inbound I-70 at Emerson Ave. early in the morning rush:

Inbound I-70 at Arlington Ave., early morning:

Inbound I-70 at Sherman Dr., evening rush. This stretch of I-70 is usually pretty clean during the afternoon. Eastbound lanes, not so much, but westbound lanes are normally doable.

In the above pictures, the traffic is natural, as in only affected by volume. Crashes were not adding to the buildup.

The I-465 closure on the southeast side continues for another full week of commutes (9/16 – 9/20). The obvious reroute around the backup is Washington St./U.S. 40, but that and other side streets really get stuffy during rush hour.

Safe travels, and hopefully you’ll catch a break or two.

Weeekend work continues across the board. Check the list below for your favorite (or least favorite) road and how it’ll be affected:
