Listen Live

A leg of Illinois St. has already on the south part of downtown. Drivers will have to reroute around the closure from now through the first half of next year.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one.

Illinois St., a northbound one-way that’s especially talented at funnelling traffic off of eastbound I-70, is scheduled (again) to close from McCarty St. to South St. early next week. The closure has been delayed a couple of times – this being the third attempt at beginning the DigIndy project on the south part of downtown. When the street finally closes, construction of the Lower Pogue’s Run Tunnel will commence.

The closure is scheduled to last until July of 2020.

The latest delay was announced last Monday after construction crews determined a water line needs some extra work before the project kicks into high gear.

Illinois St. Closure

Illinois St. is already shutdown from McCarty St. to Merrill St., and the additional leg of Merrill St. to South St. is expected to close to thru traffic early next week. Right now, USPS employees can still access the Post Office that’s adjacent to Illinois St. and South St., but drivers without the proper identification could get a ticket when trying to punch through the closure. Best not to go for it, and best to start using a reroute.

Speaking of:

Illinois St. Reroutes
The map is too colorful (I made it), and shows thru traffic getting pushed eastbound on McCarty St., then northbound on Madison Ave. to South St.

Eastbound I-70 drivers can get out early at West St. (exit 79A) and take Missouri St. until it becomes West St., or jump out at Meridian St (exit 79B) and take Madison Ave. until it becomes Meridian St.
