NATO: Up To 15,000 Russian Soldiers Killed Fighting In Ukraine
BRUSSELS — NATO leaders are meeting today in Brussels as the war in Ukraine hits the one-month mark. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg says they all have the same goal.
“We are determined to continue to impose costs on Russia to bring about the end of this brutal war,” Stoltenberg said to kick off the summit.
President Biden is among the leaders taking part in today’s special emergency summit. Speaking on Wednesday, Stoltenberg said the alliance will agree to “major increases” of troops in Europe’s eastern flank.
Biden will also meet with G-7 nations and address the European Union in Brussels before traveling to Poland on Friday.
NATO has amassed 140,000 troops in the region since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February. The U.S. has supplied the bulk of those armed forces.
“NATO and partners around the world are united in condemning and standing up to Russia,” said Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau. “But, also being there to support the Ukrainians as they stand and fight for the values that underpin all of our democracies.”
As many as 40,000 Russian troops have been killed, injured, captured, or gone missing in the first month of the war in Ukraine. That’s according to a NATO estimate which says of that number, between 7,000 and 15,000 troops are dead.
The Kremlin has refused to disclose official numbers. A spokesperson says releasing them is the Ministry of Defense’s “exclusive prerogative.”
At least 264 Ukrainian civilians are dead in Kyiv. The city’s mayor added that more than 300 people have sustained injuries and 80 buildings in Kyiv have been destroyed. Before the war, Kyiv was home to roughly three million people.
