EAST CHICAGO, Ind. — An eight-year-old girl hit last week by a stray bullet has died in a Chicago hospital.
Timiya Andrews was doing her homework on the living room floor when the bullet hit her in the head.
Police say someone fired 16 rounds from an automatic weapon on the street outside Andrews’ house, but only the one that struck Andrews entered the home.
Andrews was rushed to the University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital, where she spent six days in critical condition. She died on Wednesday.
Police do not believe Andrews’ home was the target of the shooting. Investigators think the bullet that killed Andrews ricocheted off of something else.
The shooting is still under investigation. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives has put up a $5,000 reward, an amount matched by East Chicago Mayor Anthony Copeland.
