MUNCIE, Ind.–They walked out to call him out. Several dozen students at Ball State University believe Marketing Pref. Shaheen Borna, was wrong to call the police on Sultan Benson, a student who declined to change seats in the classroom at Borna’s request.

Benson contends Borna called the cops because he is black.

“I’m just a student here. I’m just another paycheck. I’m just another statistic that they can put on their info for enrollment of African-American students here,” said one of the group’s leaders in the Tuesday walk out.

Another student had some demands: Early retirement, community service, and mandatory diversity and conflict training for professors.

“We have some demands. We want consequences for Borna and for future professors who do things like this. This is unacceptable.”

The students weren’t the only ones who believe the actions were overboard. Ball State Pres. Jeffrey Mearns called out Borna after last Tuesday’s incident.

“It is 2020,” said Tiffany D. Loftin, director of the NAACP’s Youth & College Division, talking to WISH TV. “White professors are calling police on black students in the classroom because they won’t move their seat? … America continues to criminalize young black kids who are just sitting in the classroom, taking notes on their laptop. This is scary. Too often, when I read stories like this, I hold my breath for the worst outcome.”
