Butler University’s Blue Nominated for Mascot Hall of Fame

INDIANAPOLIS — Butler Blue, the live English Bulldog mascot program at Butler University, is nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame.

Blue would be the first live mascot in the Hall of Fame, according to the Indianapolis Star. The Hall of Fame is located in Whiting, Ind.

In 2000, the university decided to adopt an English bulldog to serve as the school’s official mascot.

Butler Blue I was the first in a line of English bulldogs bred by Frank and Jeane King of Kong King Kennels. Blue I made his debut in Feb. 2000 to an adoring crowd at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Blue II made his debut in 2004 at the age of just eight weeks. Butler Blue III, known as “Trip”, trained with Blue II for two years to learn how to be a mascot before taking on the job himself. Trip retired in May 2020 and was replaced by the current mascot, Butler Blue IV.

Other mascots up for consideration this year include Purdue Pete, Staley Da Bear (Chicago Bears), Globie (Harlem Globetrotters), and Iceburgh (Pittsburgh Penguins).

The first round of voting begins Sunday, Oct. 3, and runs through Saturday, Oct. 9. The final round of voting will take place Oct. 17 – 23.
