INDIANAPOLIS — A man is in critical condition after his car went airborne over an interstate ramp in Indianapolis on Wednesday morning.

Witnesses say the man was speeding on southbound I-65 when his Nissan Altima went off the road just south of the I-70 overpass, traveled through the grassy median, hit a “hill” within the median, and went airborne.

The car sailed over the I-65 southbound ramp from eastbound I-70, flew over a minivan that was on the ramp, and hit the embankment below Cavalry Street.

The car hit the embankment with its front end, bounced, and came to rest about 10 feet south of where it originally hit.

The Indianapolis Fire Department estimates the car traveled a football field and a half in length.

The driver, a man in his mid-40s, was cut out of the car and taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition.

Indiana State Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
