INDIANAPOLIS — A child is in serious condition after being hit by a car Friday morning.

A young girl was hit just before 7 a.m. on Mitthoeffer Road just north of 25th Street, according to Indy Metro Police.

Police believe the girl was crossing the street to get to her bus stop when she was hit by a red vehicle, said IMPD Ofc. Simone Burris. The vehicle then drove away, headed north on Mitthoeffer Road.

“No child deserves to be struck. No child deserves to be left in the middle of the road with no medical aid rendered to her,” Burris said.

Burris asked the driver who hit the girl to turn themselves in, saying, “Do the right thing for this child and turn yourself in immediately.”

Anyone with information is asked to call IMPD. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office also offered some advice.

“The driver that hit the child this morning is likely nervous about turning themselves in. Just a reminder, we operate the civilian-administered Safe Surrender program where people that have warrants or have committed a crime can turn themselves in at the time and place of their choosing with loved ones or faith leaders present. This might be the thing that nudges someone into doing the right thing. The driver can call 317-327-SAFE (7233) or visit safe.indy.gov to begin the process,” said Captain Mitch Gore, public information officer with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
