INDIANAPOLIS — City-county councilors have passed a budget for the next fiscal year.

The 2020 budget calls for more funding for public safety, such as grants to help Indianapolis firefighters, police officers, and other community-based crime prevention efforts. The final vote was 22-2 in favor of the budget proposal.

“I’m pleased with the outcome of the Council’s vote this evening on the 2020 budget for the City of Indianapolis and Marion County,” said council president Vop Osili. “The 2020 budget adopted tonight by the Council includes significant increases in funding for IMPD, IFD, community crime prevention grants, and the arts. It does so without raising taxes.”

In the money set aside for Indianapolis Metro Police, $1.2 million will be used for deploying body cameras.

Another $117 million will be used to further repair the city’s roads and bridges that still need attention.

Mayor Joe Hogsett is thankful for the “overwhelming bipartisan support” for his budget proposal.

“Tonight’s bipartisan vote is the latest confirmation that our city is best served when we prioritize taxpayer-friendly policies and neighborhood investments over political games and partisan politics,” Hogsett said.
