UPDATE: The Elwood Police officer who was killed is identified as 24-year-old Noah Shahnavez who served the Elwood Police Department for 11 months.

ELWOOD, Ind. — Just after 2:00a.m. on Sunday, a police officer in Elwood was making a regular traffic stop when the driver, unprompted, exited and then fired multiple shots at the officer killing them.

Other police officers arrived and gave help until EMS arrived, where they took the officer to a hospital in Elwood, but had to be flown to another in Indianapolis. The officer died at that hospital.

The suspect ran before backup could arrive, but instigated a police chase when Hamilton Sheriff’s deputies saw the suspect on the State Road 37 driving a Buick. The deputies tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver continued to drive.

That chase continued all the way down I-69 to Fishers, where tire deflation devices were used and two PIT maneuvers finally sent the suspect crashing into the median. Police then caught the shooter.

The Elwood Police Department has requested the Indiana State Police to lead the investigation.
